The discourse on languages in the French-speaking Moroccan press, Direct speech, ethos and enunciative postures
Abstract

The current study analyses the pragmatic effects of direct reported speech in the construction of discursive identities of the speakers in the Moroccan newspapers published in French, and especially on the discourse about language. Reported speech as a dialogic form is of paramount importance in the newspapers’ discourse as it allows for an insertion of another discourse in the speaker’s own discourse, taking a variety of forms, seeking objectivity sometimes and having the intention of dominance in other cases. In other words, in the dynamics of the construction of identity, the scripter can choose the position of an over-enunciator or an under-enunciator to serve his pragmatic intentions. The direct reported speech is a field where the speakers’ positions are played out in terms of enunciative postures and the shaping of discursive identities.
